SWEETWATER

Whether your water comes from GWI pipes, a rain vat, a well, or the creek, home treatment gives you a second line of defense against the germs that cause diarrhoea, typhoid, and stomach illness. The methods below are drawn from WHO and CDC household water treatment guidance — the same methods health agencies teach worldwide. Most cost almost nothing.

🧮 A family buying two 5-gallon bottles a week can spend tens of thousands of Guyana dollars a year. A pot, a bottle of plain bleach, or a good filter pays for itself in weeks.

1 · Boiling Cheapest & surest

• Bring water to a rolling boil for one full minute — big bubbles, not just steam.
• Let it cool on its own; don't add ice made from untreated water.
• If the water is cloudy, let it settle first and pour the clear part through a clean cloth, then boil.
• Store in a clean, covered container (see safe storage below). Boiled water tastes flat — pour it between two clean jugs a few times to bring the air back.

2 · Chlorination with plain bleach Pennies per gallon

Use only plain, unscented household bleach (5–9% sodium hypochlorite) — never scented, splashless, or "colour-safe" types.

• Mix well and wait 30 minutes before drinking.
• A very faint chlorine smell is right; if there's no smell at all, repeat the dose and wait again.
• Settle and cloth-strain cloudy water first — chlorine works poorly through mud.

3 · Filters — ceramic, biosand & carbon Everyday workhorse

• Ceramic candle filters (the clay-candle bucket type) strain out bacteria and parasites; scrub the candle regularly and replace it on schedule.
• Biosand filters — a concrete box of layered sand — are proven for yards and communities; the living sand layer does the cleaning.
• Activated carbon improves taste and smell and reduces chlorine — but carbon alone does not disinfect. Pair it with boiling, bleach, or a ceramic stage.
• Buying a cartridge unit? Look for one certified to remove bacteria and cysts, and change cartridges on time — an old filter can be worse than none.

4 · SODIS — sunlight disinfection Free, from the sky

• Fill a clear plastic (PET) bottle — 2 litres or smaller — with clear water.
• Lay it flat in full sun for at least 6 hours (two full days if heavily overcast). Guyana sun is excellent at this job.
• The sun's UV kills the germs. Works only on clear water in clear bottles — settle cloudy water first, and don't use scratched or green bottles.

5 · Safe storage — protect what you cleaned The forgotten step

• Store treated water in a clean, covered container with a narrow mouth or tap — recontamination in storage undoes everything.
• Pour or use the tap — never dip cups or hands into the container.
• Wash storage containers with soap and a little bleach solution weekly.
• Rain vats: keep gutters clean, screen the inlet against leaves and mosquitoes, and first-flush the early rain after dry spells — then treat drinking water from the vat like any other source.

Blackwater creeks run dark from natural plant tannins — the colour itself isn't the danger; the unseen germs are. Treat it like any surface water: clear it, then kill the germs.
